Dorset museum’s new hire to bring history to life for schoolchildren
The Museum of East Dorset has appointed a new learning and family assistant to help co-ordinate trips to the museum by schools from across the UK.
The Museum of East Dorset in Wimborne has appointed a new learning and family assistant who will help to co-ordinate visits to the museum by schools from across the country.
New hire Rachel Simpson-Fernandes has over a decade of experience in education, including primary and special educational needs (SEN). She said: “When this job was advertised I couldn’t believe my luck – teaching and museums! Two of my favourite things – the perfect role for me that combines creativity and practical skills.”
As learning and family assistant, Rachel will help bring history to life for the hundreds of schoolchildren who visit the museum each year and take part in themed education workshops that cover over 2000 years of British history. Other activities for schoolchildren include role play, the chance to experience cooking in the museum’s Victorian kitchen, and to learn about life as a scullery maid in the Victorian washroom.
Rachel added: “I remember coming to the museum when I was at school. It’s changed so much since then. No boring questionnaires here! It’s wonderful to now have a part in being involved in moving the museum forward by offering even more engaging activities for schoolchildren.”
The Museum of East Dorset has received the prestigious Sandford Award seven times to date. This is the only nationally recognised award for heritage learning in historical settings and was awarded in recognition of the museum’s outstanding contribution to on-site sessions for schools and its ‘Hands-On History’ educational resources offered on a loan programme to schools nationwide.
Rachel will also lead the museum’s voluntary educational team and is looking to recruit new volunteers. She said: “No experience is necessary as training and mentoring is provided. Every session also has a detailed delivery plan that is easy to follow.
“All we need is people with a passion for history, who love the magic of museums and how they enrich children’s lives. And if you fancy dressing up as a Victorian housekeeper or Roman soldier – even better!”
