Dorset remains in top 10 safest areas of England
Latest crime statistics show overall crime in the county fell by 2.3 per cent in the year to 30 June 2024.
The latest statistics from the Office for National Statistics released on Thursday 24 October showed that overall crime in Dorset fell by 2.3 per cent between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024. Dorset remains in the top 10 safest areas of England.
The drop in overall crime was driven by significant improvements in certain categories. The number of rape offences decreased by 12.6 per cent compared to an average increase of 1.9 per cent across the country.
Reports of stalking and harassment also continued to fall during this period by 8.1 per cent, compared to previous decrease of 2.9 per cent.
And while shoplifting increased by 19.2 per cent, this rise was well below the national increase of 28.2 per cent.
Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell said: “I am pleased to see that crime in Dorset has continued to fall, keeping the county one of the safest areas to live, work and visit. We are committed to our vision of being the safest county and remain steadfast in our relentless pursuit of criminals who cause harm to our communities, keeping people safe and putting victims first.”
Commenting on the results, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “I am pleased Dorset has once again seen a fall in overall crime, ensuring we stay one of the safest places in the country.
“These latest figures prove once again that the Force continues to deliver for the people who live, work, and visit here and I am determined to ensure this positive trend continues.
“Along with a fall in violence against the person offences, a 12.6 per cent reduction in the number of rape offences is reassuring as I know the impact this despicable and traumatic crime has on victims.
“While I am also encouraged by the drop in stalking and harassment offences, I want to encourage anyone experiencing these crimes to come forward and report them to Dorset Police. Your safety is important and there are people there to help and support you.
The improvements were attributed to more accurate recording of offences by the police, and the success of initiatives such as Operation Shopkeeper aimed at tackling shoplifting and supporting retailers.
Dorset Police say that its Neighbourhood Policing Teams continue to engage with communities across Dorset to reinforce key crime prevention advice to help stop residents becoming victims. You can find the latest prevention guidance here.
Building a body of intelligence on what is happening in Dorset’s communities is vital in enabling the police to pursue anyone intent on criminality. If you have information, please come forward and tell Dorset Police what you know via the intelligence portal.
