A dramatic rescue has taken place after a man, in his early 60s, fell 30 feet down a well in Linford, New Forest.
Upon receiving the 999 call at 5.50pm yesterday (21 July) crews from three counties; Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire, quickly mobilised to the scene.
The large well, situated inside a barn and measuring 2.5m in diameter, contained water and with the casualty unable to swim, firefighters, on arrival, lowered a life jacket down to aid the male casualty.
Firefighters then set up a rope rescue and lowered a firefighter down the well with assistance from a Hampshire Urban Search and Rescue Specialist. The male casualty was assisted into a harness and lifted to safety.
Officer in Charge of the incident Station Manager Greg Garrett said: “This was an unusual incident where the quick and effective partnership working between firefighters and the ambulance service aided the successful rescue of the man.
“We are extremely pleased that, after falling such a long way down the well, the man has now been released from hospital and is recovering well at home.”
The incident came to a close at approximately 7pm and the male casualty was taken to hospital by the South Central Ambulance Service.
