DWFRS recognises Dorset businesses for their support
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) have presented awards to businesses in Dorset in recognition of their support to on-call firefighters.
Both HMP Portland and Sherborne Girls’ School have received awards from DWFRS in recognition of their support to on-call firefighters.
HMP Portland has released staff for fire calls over many years and is the employer of Daniel Terrey, station commander at Portland fire station. The award was collected by Nigel Duggan, from the prison’s management team.
Sherborne Girls’ School was recognised for allowing two members of staff to respond to fire calls from work. The award was collected by head, Dr Ruth Sullivan.
The presentations were made on 18 April at the Service’s annual awards ceremony. Chief fire officer Ben Ansell, and Matt Bland, client director at sponsor Kubus presented the awards.
Mr Bland said: “It is an honour for Kubus to continue our relationship with DWFRS, who give so much to our communities.”
Assistant chief fire officer Andy Cole said: “These awards are very well deserved. These two employers have allowed our firefighters time for training and provided flexibility in working hours. In return, the staff have used their knowledge and expertise in areas such as fire marshal duties, first aid, and guidance with risk assessments. The communities of Portland and Sherborne have benefited greatly from their support of their local fire stations.”
Anyone interested in becoming an on-call firefighter should visit www.dwfire.org.uk/on-call-firefighters to see whether there’s an on-call fire station near to where they live or work, then get in touch to have a chat about what’s possible.
Working as an on-call firefighter means being involved in a wide range of activities in your local area, including responding to emergency calls, carrying out work to support the community’s needs, and providing prevention advice to help keep people safe.
In return, the fire and rescue service offers flexible work to fit around study, other employment and/or family commitments; first class training and development opportunities; additional income; and a chance to make a difference.
