A Poole woman in her 80s had her purse stolen in a distraction burglary when a man, who claimed to be a council worker, gained entry to her property in Benbow Crescent, Rossmore to ‘check the pipes’.
He said he had left his identity card in his van and initially she refused entry, but later allowed the man into the kitchen. He then went into her lounge without her permission before leaving. Afterwards, it was discovered that a purse containing bank cards and a small amount of cash had gone missing.
The incident happened between 12.10pm and 12.30pm on Tuesday 19 November.
Police Constable Paul Diffey, of Poole police, said: “Despite the occupant’s best efforts to check the suspect’s identity he was very persistent. He only left when she threatened to call the police.
“I am now in the position to release an e-fit of the offender.
“I would urge the man pictured – and anyone who recognises him – to contact Dorset Police.
“It was fortunate that the occupant was not injured but this has been a distressing ordeal for her.
“I would like to remind all residents not to allow entry to anyone unless they display a valid identity card.
“Anyone with concerns is also encouraged to check if unexpected visits are genuine. Legitimate companies and organisations are always happy to confirm whether one of their representatives is at a location for a genuine reason.”
