E-scooters arrive in Christchurch
A total of 100 electric scooters arrived in Christchurch on 15 August, expanding on a popular service available in Bournemouth and Poole.
A fleet of 100 electric scooters arrived in Christchurch on 15 August, expanding on a popular service offered to residents in Bournemouth and Poole.
The e-scooters are part of a national trial; the scheme in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is one of 22 pilot schemes across the country helping the government assess the demand and practicality of legalising e-scooters.
Provided by bikeshare company Beryl, the e-scooters are designed to be ideal for commuting, meeting friends, or exploring Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch, with access to designated parking bays across the area.
According to BCP Council, demand for Beryl bikes and e-scooters have exceeded expectations, with 2.66 million journeys undertaken since the scheme was launched, with riders travelling over 9 million km. A third of all journeys have replaced a car trip, so this has removed over 865,000 vehicle journeys from congested roads.
Louise Berkhauer, operations manager with Christchurch BID, said: “Beryl bikes and e-bikes are hugely popular in Christchurch, and we welcome this expansion of the scheme. The more visitors that can be encouraged to use these convenient and accessible forms of travelling to our town centre, the better.
“Christchurch is a must-visit if you are in the area with its vibrant High Street, historic sites, beautiful river-way and Quay to explore. It’s so easy to hop on a Beryl bike or e-scooter to get here for a brilliant day.”
Riders can unlock and rent a scooter through the Beryl app, available on Apple and Android smartphones. You must hold a valid provisional or full UK driving licence which will be verified before the scooter can be hired.
