Electric bike scheme coming to Dorchester, Weymouth and Portland
More than 100 e-bikes will be deployed across the Dorset region as the council expands its bike sharing scheme to encourage more sustainable transport.
Residents of Wimborne, Ferndown, Christchurch and Poole and other parts of Dorset will already be familiar with the brightly coloured Beryl bikes dotted around their towns. Now the electric bikes are to be launched in three new parts of the county.
Dorset Council has announced it is expanding its partnership with Beryl and launching e-bike share schemes in Dorchester, Weymouth and the Isle of Portland. A total of 121 e-bikes will become available to hire for residents and visitors later this summer.
The scheme is intended to encourage more sustainable transport habits across the county. Users can hire a bike from a designated Beryl Bay by downloading the Beryl app to their smartphone and paying in a way that suits their needs, whether that’s Pay-As-You-Ride, a Minute Bundle and various pass options. Bikes must be returned to a Beryl Bay after use.
The e-bike hire scheme is operated by Beryl on behalf of Dorset Council.
Beryl CEO and co-founder, Phil Ellis, said: “Dorset is not only a picturesque area with plenty to see and do, it also has a clear ambition to encourage more sustainable transport choices.
“Our e-bikes are a fun, easy and versatile way to travel and their extra power can really open up areas, enabling riders to tackle hills and undertake longer journeys. They’re also great for commuting, helping to reduce physical exertion and allowing people to arrive at work clean and ready to go.
“By encouraging more people to swap four wheels for two, we can hopefully contribute even more towards reducing traffic congestion while improving air quality and public health.”
Cllr Nick Ireland, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate, continued: “As a council, we are committed to addressing climate change, and we have an important role to play in driving our county towards net zero. This innovative scheme makes it easier for more residents and visitors to enjoy Dorset’s great outdoors while helping protect the environment too.”
