Elements for a bespoke pond service
Elements Aquatics is owned and operated by Kate Taylor. The company offers design, build and maintenance of ponds and water features.
Kate has a natural affinity with water, having previously been a scuba diving instructor, before undertaking a degree in marine ecology. After graduating, she worked for an aquatics landscaping company based in Dorchester before taking a post as research assistant at The Central Caribbean Marine Institute in the Cayman Islands.
The start of the pandemic meant a return home and new venture. Kate said: “Branching out on my own was my back-up plan and, although Covid dealt my hand, I’m really pleased that this is the way it has gone.”
Kate started with pond work but has branched out into developing unique water features, such as the six- foot copper leaf she recently built. She said: “The leaf was made using copper sheets that I heated and hammered into shape. I loved doing it so much that I am about to start a blacksmithing course so I can do more of this type of work.”
Kate offers a bespoke service, as every customer’s requirements are different. After an initial conversation, she carries out a site visit to see the space and discuss what the customer would like, before providing a quote. She said: “Every pond I make is unique. I love being outside and creating beautiful spaces, and with my marine background, I also understand how fish function and what they need to thrive in their environment.”
On the subject of upcoming trends, Kate said: “I’m seeing more and more people wanting wildlife ponds. This is fantastic, as, with more and more buildings going up, our wildlife is diminishing. Building this type of pond means we are providing a small haven for wildlife to flourish.”
