Falklands War tribute coming to Weymouth fort
The Standing with Giants exhibition will be at Nothe Fort from 5–30 November, Wednesdays to Sundays 10am–3pm.
A moving exhibition, which is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Falklands War, is to open to visitors at Nothe Fort in Weymouth running from 5–30 November, Wednesdays to Sundays 10am–3pm.
‘Standing with Giants’ is a large-scale installation using recycled building materials to provide meaningful spaces for people to visit and reflect. Their ethos is to value life; to understand and appreciate why we have our freedom, and to remember and pay tribute to those who have fallen so we can live with the freedom we have today.
Standing With Giants is a charity founded and led by Oxfordshire community artist Dan Barton. He said: “Standing With Giants have been overwhelmed by the amazing reactions from veterans and families of the fallen who visit the installations and share their heartfelt stories with us.”
The Falklands Tribute represents 255 silhouetted life-size figures of Seafarers, Royal Marines, Army, and Airmen and three civilians who lost their lives during the 1982 war on the Falkland Islands with Argentina.
This and an identical display, which is currently in the Falkland Islands, were created to commemorate the 40th anniversary of liberation on 14 June 2022, and have been seen on display at Thoresby Park, International Bomber Command and Royal Armouries Fort Nelson.
These figures will be on display in and around Nothe Fort’s Parade Ground, for visitors to walk amongst and reflect in remembrance.
Events coordinator for Nothe Fort, Connie Jenkins-Teague, said: “Nothe Fort is honoured to host Standing With Giants: Falklands Tribute. We have been moved by all the support from community groups that have come forward to offer help in installing, sponsoring, and stewarding this exhibition.
“Our parade ground is the perfect environment to host this art installation, and we look forward to seeing visitors walking amongst the silhouettes and reflecting upon the figures.”
