A two vehicle head-on collision occurred at around 4.13pm today (10 June) between a black BMW 3 Series and a blue Ford Fiesta on the A31 between the Lake Gates and Merley Bird roundabouts.
Sadly the woman driver of the Fiesta died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and the coroner notified.
Three other passengers in the Fiesta were seriously injured.
The front seat passenger, a woman, was taken to Poole Hospital by ambulance. Her condition is said to be serious but stable.
Two men who were travelling in the back of the Fiesta were airlifted by the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and the Hampshire Air Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital. They both sustained critical injuries.
Two men who were travelling in the BMW – the driver and front seat passenger – were taken by ambulance to Poole Hospital where their condition is said to be serious but stable.
A stretch of the A31 has been closed while collision investigators examine the scene.
A number of enhanced medically-trained police officers were also sent to the incident.
Inspector Matt Butler of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit said: “I am appealing to anyone who saw either vehicle prior to or at the time of the collision to please contact me on 101.
“I appreciate the road closures have caused considerable congestion in the area and I would like to thank motorists for their patience.”
