Ferndown scout group meets member of the Royal Family
Gorsemoor Scout Group invested Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, into the scouts in August ahead of winning a sailing race from Guernsey to Poole.
Gorsemoor Scout Group, based in Ferndown, got the opportunity to meet a member of royalty in August ahead of taking part in the UK Sail Training Small Ships Race from Guernsey to Poole.
The group met Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, on 13 August. Verity, a member of Gorsemoor Scouts, had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest a member of royalty into the wider Scouting family and presented the Duchess with a group neckerchief and badges.
Verity said: “I was quite nervous, and it was a surreal moment. Once I got off the steps onto the pontoon, I reminded her of the Scout Law and then she repeated the Scout Promise.”
After this brush with royalty, took part in the overnight boat race celebrating 200 years of the RNLI. Gorsemoor was the only scout group taking part in the race. Gorsemoor Scouts had sailors as young as 12 racing across the channel, including overnight, to reach Poole. The Scouts were very proud to be crewing the Discovery Sailing Project Thermopylae Clipper yacht, which has previous taken part in round the world races.
Using all their hard work and skills, the scout group managed to finish in first place out of 13 yachts.
