The crew arrived minutes later and put the fire out quickly. As they returned to the fire station they noticed that vandals had pulled up an entire bed of flowers in the Millennium Park. Being community spirited, the fire crew took time to put back the plants that were strewn across the road before returning to the fire station.
A tweet by DWFRSFerndown said, “Called out just after 5am to put out a bin fire at King George V Playing Fields. As well as putting out the fire we moved flowers out of the road from a vandalised display. So sad someone wants to destroy things that make the town look nice.”
mags4dorset was alerted to the vandalism by the town council soon after 9am and went to take photographs. Our reporter Janine Pulford also noticed a tree had been damaged. Ferndown resident Gavin Williams was cycling past whilst she was there. He was understandably upset about the vandalism and helped return more of the flowers, that were strewn across the grass, back into the flowerbed.
Ferndown has recently been subjected to a spate of vandalism when on two separate occasions Silent Soldiers have been damaged, one beyond repair.
Edit (13 July, 13.47): Later in the day, members of Ferndown Middle School’s gardening club gave up their lunchtime to help replant the flowers and tidy up.
