Festive cooking kits for 1,000 Dorset families
Funding from the Department for Education has enabled The Friendly Food Club together with community organisations to deliver the kits.
Families in Dorset are to be able to produce some excellent meals over the Christmas period thanks to funding from the Department for Education (DfE).
Dorset-based food charity, The Friendly Food Club, has partnered with Dorset Council, local businesses Sixt and Booker Catering, Colehill Scouts and Vale Pantry to deliver 1,000 festive cooking kits to families.
Part of the Dorset Council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme offering, these fun cooking packs provided a craft, sport and a cooking activity including all the ingredients needed on how to make a Christmas chicken, ham and vegetable pie.
An instructional video has been produced by Bournemouth Scout Network and voluntarily edited by Mircea Donea, to provide step-by-step guidance on how to make the recipe.
Liz Guilmant-Cush, CEO of The Friendly Food Club said: “Christmas is a time for everyone to pull together to support our local communities and we are delighted to support and be supported by some wonderful Dorset-based businesses and groups.”
As Dorset’s food and education charity, The Friendly Food Club have over a decade’s experience in creating healthy, fun cooking events designed for families with small budgets.
The original Cookboxes were launched during lockdown while face-to-face workshops were on hold. The charity has distributed 12,000 bags, making 48,000 meals, since 2020.
Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, Cllr Clare Sutton said: “Many families across Dorset are struggling with the cost of living, and it is even more challenging at this time of year. Alongside funded holiday activities HAF Winter in Dorset remote provisions ensures that all children have the opportunity to enjoy festive fun and activities during the Christmas holiday.”
Delivering to 1,000 families across Dorset before Santa arrives was quite a feat. However, with over 20 dedicated volunteers from vehicle hire business Sixt and the hardworking Colehill Scouts, pie in the sky soon became pie in the oven for many households across the county.
