First school pupils look on the bright side
International Positive Noticing Day was marked by pupils at Pamphill First School and Witchampton First School.
Local first school children have been looking on the positive side of life.
Pupils from Pamphill First School and Witchampton First School, both part of Initio Learning Trust, took part in the recent International Positive Noticing Day.
The children wrote ‘positive notes’ on simple labels and shared them with one another throughout the day.
Messages included thanking one another for being friendly and supportive, for being a kind friend and for tucking in their chairs.
The idea of positive noticing is to build self-esteem and confidence in pupils and shift the culture in the classroom to desirable behaviours.
It is hoped that the positive, emotionally supportive idea will extend into homes and communities so that children and young people are regularly noticed in a way that boosts wellbeing and resilience.
The initiative was set up and developed by behaviour expert and author, Paul Dix, in a bid to overcome negativity and remind school communities of the things they can be proud and thankful for.
Sharon Staddon, executive headteacher at Pamphill and Witchampton First Schools, said: “We took part in Positive Noticing Day for the first time at Pamphill and Witchampton and we had an amazing day.
“Labels were given to staff as well as pupils and many staff members have told me how much this meant to them. I got one too and have proudly attached it to my lanyard.
“The day reminded pupils of our expectations in a way that also makes them feel safe, nurtured and valued.”
