Flood warning issued across Dorset and BCP
Heavy rainfall over the weekend has prompted the Environment Agency to issue a flood warning to residents in the county.
Following heavy rainfall over the weekend, the Environment Agency has issued a flood warning to residents across East Dorset, Bournemouth, and Christchurch.
The agency is monitoring the River Stour from Sturminster Marshall through to Christchurch.
According to the warning, flooding is expected to occur at: farms at Sturminster Marshall, Cowgrove, shops in Wimborne, Mill Street in Corfe Mullen, Bridge House Hotel in Ferndown, Brecon Close, Ringwood Road, Throop Road in Bournemouth, and Barrack Road and Willow Way in Christchurch.
The agency said: “Rising river levels are expected to cause flooding this morning.
“We are closely monitoring rainfall and river levels. Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses. Don’t put yourself or others at risk.
The warning was issued at 5:10am, with an update expected by 4pm at the latest.
If you are in an affected area, the agency has advised residents to:
- Move your family and pets to a safe place.
- Move your car or other vehicles to higher ground, if it is safe to do so.
- Move important items upstairs or to a safe place in your property, starting with items of personal value that you will not be able to replace such as family photographs, then move valuable items such as computers, furniture and furnishings.
- Turn off gas, electricity and water mains supplies before flood water starts to enter your property. Never touch an electrical switch if you are standing in water.
In case you need to leave your property, the agency advises packing a bag with enough items for a few nights away. Include essential items such as a torch with spare batteries, mobile phone and charger, warm clothes, home insurance information, water, food, first aid kit and any prescription medicines or baby care items you may need.
