Foodies flock in thousands

The atmosphere in the Festival Market was buzzing as more than 100 traders tempted people with a wide array of food and drink. The demonstration marquee was packed as Indian chef Cyrus Todiwala, festival patron Lesley Waters and Dancing on Ice and Food Network star Matt Evers joined the programme of local chefs to show off their culinary skills.

Sunday brought a Bake Off and Family Fun Day to the Kings Arms bowling green which featured activities for the kids while the adults were able to browse the stalls and take a look at the cakes, meringues and scones which had been entered into the Bake Off competition.

Young food enthusiasts were catered for at the Kids Kitchen where children of all ages were able to try their hand at a variety of dishes.

Festival Committee Chairman, Vicki Hallam, said: “The weather forecasts didn’t look at all promising before the event but, despite some quite high winds and the odd shower, the sun shone quite a lot of the time. The forecasts obviously didn’t put anyone off coming and we saw tens of thousands of people cram the High Street to taste and buy the wares.

“So much hard work goes into making the festival such a success and I have to thank all of the volunteers who gives so much of their time freely and of course all of our sponsors without whom we wouldn’t be able to put on the festival.”

Events continue throughout May with an Ale Trail – where real ale lovers can try 14 different beers from seven pubs in the borough – as well as a Tasty Trail which incorporates different offers, discounts and samples from a variety of outlets around Christchurch.
