Former nurse celebrates century
The Mayor of Wimborne, Cllr Shane Bartlett, visited Mile Oak Rest Home recently to celebrate the 100th birthday of resident Millie Martin.
Despite not wanting a fuss, Millie Martin from Mile Oak Rest Home in Wimborne, enjoyed the party and said how well it had gone.
From the age of 12, she brought up her four brothers and looked after her father, as her mother was too ill to stay at home.
Originally from Sussex, Millie was called up at 20 and trained as a nurse at the local psychiatric hospital in Woodford Essex.
She moved to Devon with her nursing friend and family in 1959 and became an assistant matron working with children with learning disabilities.
Millie and her nursing friend loved travelling, several times visiting one brother who had emigrated to South Africa and the other brother who had emigrated to Australia. There aren’t many countries she hasn’t visited.
A spokesman from Mile Oak said, “Now she is happy to stay put and be well looked after.”
