Free Earth Day events at Arts University Bournemouth
Earth Day on Monday 22 April will be celebrated at Arts University Bournemouth with an afternoon of free events.
Local people are invited to attend an event to mark Earth Day which is on Monday 22 April.
Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) will be hosting an afternoon of free talks and screenings on campus.
Originating from the inaugural Earth Day event in 1970, the annual event is the largest advocate for environmental action worldwide, partnering with over 150,000 organisations across 192 countries to promote positive action for the planet. Earth Day’s goal is to expand, educate, and engage the environmental movement on a global scale.
The Earth Day events at AUB are organised by AUB Human, a space for students and staff to use their skills to engage and address some of the most pressing issues that are facing the human race today. Alice Stevens, founder of AUB Human, said: “AUB Human celebrates social, ethical and sustainable creative practice, and we’re delighted to be supporting Earth Day again this year.
“We’re really fortunate to have alumni Jon Cleave join us this year. Jon graduated from AUB with BA Graphic Design in 2012 and has since gone on to have a very impressive career. As well as being an award-winning graphic designer, photographer and filmmaker, Jon’s now a successful entrepreneur in the ethical entertainment space founding Newyonder, a global streaming service and Certified B Corp®.”
Newyonder’s catalogue of 500 titles takes worldwide subscribers across every corner of the globe with prominent personalities who share aligned values including Morgan Freeman, Ryan Reynolds, Ewan McGregor, Autumn Peltier and Javier Bardem.
As a director, writer and producer, Jon is a multi-award-winning filmmaker on Newyonder Originals, ‘Wild Isles’ and ‘Three Moons of Biyangdo’, with over 20 plus awards and nominations from around the world.
Attendees to AUB’s Earth Day will be treated to an exclusive screening of Three Moons of Biyangdo, a BAFTA sustainable production, followed by a director’s Q&A.
“Three Moons of Biyangdo is the story of a disappearing, centuries-old tradition that encapsulates the delicate balance, and deep connections, between humanity and the natural world,” said Jon.
“Kyung-Mi, Geum-Mi and Jeong-Mi Moon are three sisters, now in their 60s, Haenyeo ‘sea women’, taking only what they need from the sea one breath at a time. We made Three Moons of Biyangdo to celebrate these women and their way of life.
“Shooting in an observational ‘fly-on-the-wall’ documentary style, we wanted to transport the audience to the small, volcanic crater island of Biyangdo, to experience the day-to-day lives of these women on land, and below the waves, exactly as they do. This story encapsulates how they coexist with the natural world, and how anyone from around the world can learn from their way of life.”
Before Jon’s talk and the film screening, Alice will open the afternoon with a welcome speech introducing this year’s Earth Day theme, ‘Planet vs Plastics’. Following Alice, guests will hear from Dr Louise Dennis, curator at Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP), based at AUB.
Alice said: “AUB Human is all about using our skills and channelling our energy to enact positive change in the world around us. It’s important to us that AUB’s resources and knowledge is shared among the wider community as well as students and alumni.
“With Jon’s incredible work in creating an ethically aware streaming platform, and Louise’s unique knowledge in plastics, we’re really excited to start those meaningful conversations and make those valuable connections that hopefully lead to positive action for our planet.’
AUB’s Earth Day on Monday 22 April runs from 2pm–5pm and is a free event for members of the public to attend, although there is limited availability, please book via https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aub-human-presents-earth-day-monday-22-april-1400-1700-tickets-867384860467?aff=oddtdtcreator
