From murder mystery to marine conservation: talks at Wimborne u3a
Wimborne u3a is inviting members and non-members to two upcoming talks covering very different subject matters.
The Wimborne branch of the u3a organises a varied programme of talks throughout the year, and its next two events cover very different subject matters.
First, one of Britain’s most intriguing and controversial murder cases will be brought to life on Friday 20 February, as retired detective and author Dr Paul Stickler presents ‘The Green Bicycle Murder’.
The talk revisits the tragic death of 21-year-old Bella Wright, who set out on a cycle ride through the Leicestershire countryside in 1919 and was later found shot dead near her home. Witness accounts soon focused on a mysterious man riding a green bicycle, and a year later an arrest was finally made, but questions have lingered ever since.
Paul Stickler promises an absorbing, thought-provoking and highly entertaining talk that will appeal to anyone with an interest in true crime and social history.
Then, on Friday 20 March, the community is invited to dive into environmental issues with a public talk entitled ‘Conserving the Seas – Studland Bay Marine Conservation Zone’.
Presented by Howard Davidson, an environmental manager and sailor, the talk will offer first-hand insight into the creation of the Studland Bay Marine Conservation Zone. Introduced to protect fragile marine habitats, the designation has sparked debate among conservationists, boat users and local stakeholders alike.
Davidson will explore the challenges of striking a balance between environmental protection and leisure use in one of Dorset’s most popular coastal destinations. His talk promises an informative and thought-provoking look at how conservation policy works in practice and why collaboration is vital to the future of our seas.
Both events will take place at Wesley Hall, Methodist Church, King Street, Wimborne. Doors open at 10am for a 10.30am start. Admission on the door is £2 for u3a members and £4 for non-members, and booking is not required.
Wimborne u3a’s ongoing programme of talks is open to everyone, including both members and non-members alike. The talks offer an opportunity to enjoy engaging speakers, meet new people, and gain fresh perspectives on topics ranging from history and culture to science and the environment.
