The Science department at Ferndown Upper School (FUS) in Dorset recently launched its first biology photographic competition.
The idea behind the competition was to explore the connection between biology and other subjects eg art and to inspire students who don’t necessarily have a scientific leaning to become involved in the biology department. The remit was anything alive including plants, animals, pets, trees.
Mrs Druce, Head of Biology said, “ I also wanted to encourage students who don’t have lots of expensive equipment to take interesting photos. In fact I think 90 percent of them were taken on mobiles and tablets rather than expensive cameras. This year I was looking for interesting subjects and something unusual and different as well as photography talent as well of course.”
The entries were judged by the science department anonymously, with staff voting for their top four pictures. Mrs Druce commented, “There were 37 entries of exceptional quality including snails, sand lizards, butterflies and passion flowers, so we will definitely be running the competition again next year. In the summer term we also intend to run a biology 3d sculpture competition where the students can make models eg cells. We can’t wait to see the entries for that!”.
