Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show enjoys successful first day
Tickets are still available on the gate for the second day of the annual rural show held at the Turnpike Showground in Motcombe.
The morning rain failed to deter visitors to the first day of the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show on Wednesday 14 August. Tickets are still available on the gate for the second day of this annual rural show.
Visitors who braved the weather and came to the Turnpike Showground in Motcombe were treated to a range of agricultural attractions, countryside exhibits, crafts and live music.
A highlight of the day was the camel racing, as the Show welcomed one of the country’s most renowned animal trainers, Joseph Fossett, and his Amazing Camels who’ve been featured in Bollywood, Disney and Marvel movies.
There was also a livestock competition, featuring an array of rare-breed cattle and sheep with sheep handlers as young as five showing off their four-legged friends. In the afternoon, the overall prize winners took part in a Grand Parade alongside a line-up of cattle, sheep and heavy horses.
The equestrian events highlighted the skills of young jockeys who competed in a Shetland pony race, alongside full-scale showjumping and stately carriage driving.
As well as a fun day out for the family, the Show is an opportunity for the farming community from across the county to come together and network, do business and enjoy a brief respite from the busy harvest season.
Gates to the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show closes today to 6pm.
