Golf fun for Boscombe school children
Pupils from Bethany Junior School learnt golf skills at Remedy Oak Golf Club thanks to Variety the Children’s Charity.

A group of 12 excited children from Bethany Junior School in Boscombe spent a day learning golf skills at Remedy Oak Golf Club, near Wimborne.
The club gave the party from Variety the Children’s Charity a warm welcome and a day to remember. The Year 6 children travelled in their Sunshine Coach that was presented in 2023 by Shan and the Bournemouth Boys Club.
Arranged by Variety Wessex supporter Peter Jenkins, it was the second time Variety children had been invited to Remedy Oak. The morning started with a three mile walk round part of the course with the club’s head professional Dominic Knight. He explained the fairways, roughs, greens and bunkers, how each hole is ranked and the challenges they give the players. After a demonstration showing the correct way to swing a golfclub, each child had the chance to try out some shots on the golf range. The children also had a ride in a golf buggy.
The day also included a sandwich lunch with hot chips out on the terrace overlooking the lake and course. Assistant catering manager Marta helped the children create their own fizzy drinks and they were given a lesson on coffee making by operations assistant Ryan.
Elisabeth Rawson-Jones, pastoral lead at Bethany CE Junior School, said: “These two visits to Remedy Oak Golf Club have been absolutely brilliant. Both days have given our pupils such memorable experiences and an introduction to a sport that they may not have been able to access without this opportunity. Thank you, Frances and Variety Wessex, Peter, Dominic and everyone at the club for your welcome and for such an enjoyable day.”
Frances Cornelius, chairman of Variety Wessex, said: “A huge thank you to everyone at Remedy Oak Golf Club for giving these children such an interesting day. The individual tuition given by Dominic was fantastic as was the experience of seeing, at first hand, your beautiful course on such a lovely spring day. Peter, thank you for organising this second golf experience. What a fabulous day it has been for these children.”
The day was part of the Variety the Children’s Charity Great Day’s Scheme that aims to give disadvantaged children positive memories.
