A ground-breaking ceremony took place at Bournemouth’s Pier Approach today to launch one of the Council’s flagship projects in its Seafront Strategy.
The eastern side of Pier Approach is being transformed as part of the Council’s 20-year vision to develop a world-class seafront. Work is now underway to create a landmark tourist information kiosk close to the beach, a water play feature with interactive jets, colourful lighting and landscaping improvements.
The Leader of the Council, Councillor John Beesley, said: “Improving the gateway from the gardens to the seafront is a vitally important investment that demonstrates the quality of what Bournemouth has to offer and is another step towards creating a world-class resort. We want to attract new visitors and encourage residents and their families to spend more time here and enjoy Bournemouth’s award-winning gardens, parks and beaches.
“The new and improved Pier Approach will provide an outstanding backdrop for future seafront events and add to the success of this summer’s programme which included live concerts from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and theatre performances hosted in the Waterfront open air arena, formerly the site of the Imax building.”
Speaking after the ceremony, Councillor Lawrence Williams, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture, said: “We are delighted to be investing in Pier Approach as part of our town-wide regeneration. Creating a world-class gateway to the seafront from the gardens will help establish Bournemouth’s position as Britain’s premier destination for holiday-makers. These improvements will stimulate Bournemouth’s economy, unlocking private sector investment and creating new jobs for local people.”
The £4 million cost of phase one of the scheme has been funded by Bournemouth Council with a further phase to follow for the western side of Pier Approach, subject to securing additional funding.
The work is expected to complete by Spring 2015.
