Highlights from Dorset and Hampshire Remembrance Sunday services
Communities across the area gathered on Sunday to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the country’s armed forces.
Communities across Dorset and Hampshire gathered for Remembrance Sunday services on 9 November, to remember the contribution and loss of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women in the two World Wars and all worldwide conflicts since.
In Verwood, crowds assembled around Ferrett Green War Memorial to mark the national two minutes’ silence at 11am. The service was led by the Mayor of Verwood, Cllr Spencer Flower, with a short sermon by Revd Julian Macro JP. Verwood Concert Brass band provided music, while members of 259 Squadron appeared in military uniform.
At midday, a procession was led through the streets of Ringwood and gathered at the War Memorial for a short service. The service was opened by Revd Sue Baker, who was recently appointed as the new reverend of Trinity United Church in Ringwood. In attendance were many of the town’s residents, members of the Town Council, veterans, and groups of local cadets, scouts and guides.
In the afternoon, a procession gathered at King George V Playing Fields in Ferndown and marched to St Mary’s Church for a service. The procession was led by Poole Sea Cadet’s marching band. As well as residents, the town council, and local MP Sir Christopher Chope, the procession featured local air, sea and army cadet units, members of the fire service, and several military vehicles.
Remembrance Day takes place on Tuesday 11 November.
