Artur Wasil, 25 and of no fixed abode, has been jailed for three years and seven months for robbing a woman aged in her 90s as she walked along a Poole road.
Wasil was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 16 December, after pleading guilty to robbery at the same court on 16 November.
The court heard that on 28 June 2016 the victim was walking along Levitt’s Lane when she felt a knock to her back. She was then grabbed from behind across her throat and chest area. As the victim felt her attacker’s hands move inside her shirt she shouted “get off” and elbowed him with some force. He ran away toward Church Street.
The victim continued to walk home and raised the alarm. She then discovered that most of her gold necklace which had been given to her by a good friend was missing. All that remained was the clasp and a few inches of chain.
CCTV footage showed Wasil following the victim out of Poole Tourist Information Office toward the High Street.
He was later seen to enter Jemini Jewellers in Boscombe. A member of staff from the jewellers spoke to the suspect who had brought in a piece of chain to either sell or repair. The member of staff subsequently identified that the piece of chain Wasil had was the same as the one belonging to the victim.
Wasil was arrested on 1 July.
Detective Inspector Garry Knight, of Bournemouth CID, said: “Artur Wasil carried out a callous attack on a vulnerable elderly woman as she walked alone through Poole town centre.
“I hope the sentence handed out by the court today will bring her some comfort that justice has been served.
“Criminals such as Wasil have no place in our community and offences such as this will simply not be tolerated.”
