Jurassic Coast walk raises thousands of pounds for Cancer Research
More than £27,000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK following a mammoth 12-mile sponsored walk along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
Around 80 colleagues from Tesco stores in Bournemouth, Dorchester, Ferndown, Poole and Shaftesbury took part in an epic 12-mile sponsored walk along the Jurassic Coast to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
The challenge began with an early morning warm-up by Weymouth Pavilion before trekking along the Jurassic Coast to Lulworth Cove, with a lot of challenging terrain to overcome along the way.
Tesco’s Lead Manager Danielle Croad said: “Raising such an incredible amount for Cancer Research UK shows just what’s possible when you put your mind to something. What started as a conversation with my mentor six months ago has turned into something incredible. I’m extremely proud of everyone involved.”
She added: “Everyone kept each other’s spirits up with encouragement, lots of laughter, and even a few attempts at singing YMCA along the way.
“What stood out most was how great it felt to see everyone together, supporting one another and sharing the experience. By the end, there was a real sense of achievement, as well as some tired feet.”
As well as the Jurassic Coast Challenge, other colleagues organised in-store fundraising activities including a sponsored in-store bike ride, book sales, children’s games and even a cosplay event to help raise a grand total of £27,936.
Nick Boucher, store manager at the retailer’s Shaftesbury Superstore, said: “For some, it was a challenge, for others a workout, but we all crossed the finish line. One person’s dream became our shared success, proving that when we use our scale for good and work together, we can achieve anything.”
Eve Mitchell, associate director of Supporter Relationship Management at Cancer Research UK, said: “Our sincere thanks to all the Tesco colleagues involved in organising this incredible fundraiser for Cancer Research UK, and congratulations to everyone who laced up their walking boots and crossed the finish line at Lulworth Cove.
“In the last 50 years, Cancer Research UK’s work has helped to double cancer survival in the UK, but we know we need to go further and faster to beat cancer for everyone.
“The amazing £27,936 raised will help fund more life-saving research to bring forward a world where people live longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer. Thank you.”
