Knoll Gardens celebrates 30th anniversary
This year, Knoll Gardens near Wimborne celebrate 30 years under the caring ownership of Neil Lucas and his family who purchased the site in 1994.
The ambition of Neil Lucas and his family was to create a specialist ornamental grass nursery in the four-acre gardens, and focus on naturalistic gardening, which has been achieved over the last three decades.
Neil’s extensive knowledge of ornamental grasses makes him one of the country’s leading experts.
Following the principles of naturalistic gardening, significant parts of the gardens have been reshaped over the years, with new zones created such as the dry meadow and rain garden, whilst other spaces have been reimagined, including the replanting of the Dragon Garden in the Prairie Style last year, in anticipation of this year’s anniversary.
The 30-year milestone will also be marked with a series of new interpretation boards telling the story of the gardens, and a new website.
Managed in harmony with nature, the gardens are increasingly a place of sanctuary for wildlife.
Through Knoll’s naturalistic approach, expounded by their charitable organisation, the Knoll Gardens Foundation, they help gardeners to work with nature and adapt to changing climate through courses, masterclasses, educational events and research.
Much of the data collected through surveys is shared with local and national organisations to inform future conservation.
The serenity of the gardens is also a balm for human visitors and in keeping with the calming environment, can help build a sense of well-being whether through painting, photography or yoga.
Looking ahead Knoll Gardens and Nursery are keen to add more plants to their range and building on their ever-growing knowledge of grasses, and of the relationship between gardens, gardening and the natural environment.
People can learn more about the gardens on the newly launched website, knollgardens.co.uk.
