Monthly dementia-friendly daytime screenings of classic movies are set to become a regular feature of the film programme at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts thanks to a new initiative created in partnership with Borough of Poole.
The screenings, although not exclusively for people with dementia, are particularly suitable for people affected by the condition, their partners and family members, as well as the people who care for them professionally. It is understood that during the film there may be people talking, moving around or leaving the cinema, and additionally, the volume is reduced slightly, cinema house lights are left on low so that people can see to move around and staff are on hand to assist.
“Research carried out by Age UK in Lancashire highlighted that whilst most people assume that someone caring for a person with dementia would want a respite break, actually what many couples want is a return to normality and a chance to enjoy time together again, which is so important for their continuing relationship,” explained Sara St George, Head of Sales and Marketing for Lighthouse. “Our dementia-friendly cinema screenings offer a relaxing environment for couples or families affected by dementia and a chance to meet other people in a similar situation. We also provide a free hot drink and biscuits before the film to make it a more sociable occasion.”
