Paul Martin of Flog it! nominated Ashley Heath based Friends of the Strays of Greece for his winnings from the popular quiz show, The Chase, While the celebrity team failed to beat the Chaser the charity still benefited with a cheque for £1000 and, as its founder Lyn Purden, explained,, it was a welcome surprise.
She said: “We are so grateful to Paul Martin for this – he is our patron and a great animal lover. I had a brief phone call from ITV to say that £1000 was being donated by a celebrity – and then a few days later one of our supporters was watching and saw Paul donate his £1000 to us.
“We are just about to set out with a van for Greece – taking food and other items to help with the vast numbers of stray cats and dogs that increase almost daily. Despite our extensive work in neutering cats – there are kittens everywhere, scavenging off uncollected street rubbish. This money has been used straight away to pay for more neutering at Aegina “.
