Dorset Police is issuing crime prevention advice to the public ahead of a weekend of festivities in the county.
With the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Bournemouth Air Festival both being held between Wednesday 27 August and Sunday 31 August 2014, members of the public are being advised to follow simple steps to help prevent crime at these busy events.
Superintendent Pete Windle said: “Dorset Police is prepared for the increased number of visitors that these two festivals bring to the county each year.
“We are working together with event organisers to prevent crime but by following some simple advice you can also help keep yourself and your possessions safe.
“I would like to wish anybody spending time in Dorset an enjoyable weekend but would also ask that you plan ahead, keep your belongings safe and be aware of what’s happening around you.”
Dorset Police is issuing the following crime prevention advice:
- Only bring what you absolutely need
- Do not be tempted to leave valuables in your vehicle
- Keep cash and possessions on you
- Do not leave your backpack or handbag unattended
- Mark your property where possible
- Protect your mobile phone – on your mobile phone, key in *#06# and make a note of your unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number so that you can ask your service provider to immobilise your phone in the event that it gets lost or stolen
- Report crime at the time – there will be police officers at the event, alternatively call 101 or 999 in an emergency. If you have witnessed a crime you can also call Crimetsoppers on 0800 555 111.
Superintendent Pete Windle continued: “Given the increased number of visitors to Dorset we would also encourage people driving into the county to take some practical steps for a smooth journey.

Due to the Air Festival, roads around Bournemouth town centre, as well as the A338 and A31, are expected to be busy in the morning from 10am and between 4pm and 6pm. Roads are also likely to have increased traffic after the fireworks on Friday and Saturday night after 10pm.
The Great Dorset Steam Fair is located on the A354 at Tarrent Hinton, Blandford. The following routes are expected to be busy during the Fair:
- A354 between Puddletown to Blandford and Blandford to Salisbury
- A350 between Blandford and Shaftesbury
- C13 Dinah’s Hollow between Melbury Abbas and B3081 Cann Common is currently closed.
