Man jailed at Bournemouth Crown Court for violent abuse
Junior Turaga admitted the offences of non-fatal strangulation and controlling and coercive behaviour towards a woman in Dorchester.
A man who admitted offences of non-fatal strangulation and controlling and coercive behaviour was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 3 February to three years in prison. In addition, a restraining order was put in place for seven years, preventing him from making contact with his victim.
Officers launched an investigation following a report that Junior Turaga, 21, of no fixed abode, had placed his hands around the neck of a woman who was known to him at an address in Dorchester on Monday 14 October 2024 and tightened his grip until she struggled to breathe.
The woman also disclosed a history of controlling behaviour displayed by the defendant, including checking her mobile phone to see who she had been contacting, as well as making threats to harm himself, her family or her car if she did not do as he wished.
Police Constable Harry Chaplin, of Weymouth police, said: “Thanks to the bravery shown by the victim in this case, we have been able to hold Junior Turaga to account for the violent and abusive behaviour he displayed towards her.
“I hope the courage she has shown sends a message to victims of domestic abuse that they will be supported, and we will do all we can to ensure perpetrators face justice.”
