A 20-year-old man from Sutton in Surrey has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for manslaughter.
Lewis Gill pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced on Friday 21 February 2014 at Salisbury Crown Court. He was given a four year prison sentence for manslaughter and a further six months’ imprisonment for other matters committed outside of Dorset – a total of four and a half years in jail.
The court heard evidence that on Wednesday 6 November 2013, Gill assaulted 40-year-old Bournemouth man Andrew Young outside the Tesco Metro store on Charminster Road causing him to sustain a serious head injury. He later died at Southampton hospital.
Detective Inspector Marcus Hester, of Dorset Police’s Major Crime Team, said: “This was a violent attack on an innocent man which had a tragic outcome.
“This case shows that violence does not resolve anything and can have far reaching consequences not imagined at the time.
“Today the court has issued a sentence deemed appropriate and in accordance with the evidence put to them.
“Criminal behaviour such as this will not be tolerated and we are committed to bringing offenders to justice.”
The Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor in the case was Kerry Maylin.
