The Rights Respecting Schools steering group of Hillside Community First School in Verwood, made up of children from each class, went to visit their mayor, Simon Gibson, in the town council offices to find out more about his role and that of the Town Council. The children have been learning about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and one of the Articles states that they have the right to have their views heard on decisions that affect them. They thought that a trip would be a good way to understand some of the local decision making processes.
The children all had questions from their class and they kept Simon Gibson on his toe and at the end of the session everyone had a turn at trying on the mayor’s robes.
