Lawrences’ popular auction in Crewkerne of Militaria, Coins and Medals on the 21 May, attracted a great deal of interest.
Within the militaria, an Indian Katar dagger sliced through its estimate to make £1950. A brace of military flintlock pistols with intriguing marks for the Nazim of Hyderabad’s bodyguard shot to £2070; and a Lang percussion walking stick gun from the early-mid 19th Century housed a once lethal shotgun within its finely finished casing. This fired up collectors before selling for £1000.
Medals shone with a Military Cross group of six medals to Colonel John Evelyn Gibbs of Tyntesfield (1879-1932) making £2440; a cased set of 13 specimen coins from 1902, ranging from a rare £5 piece to a Maundy penny, that made £4270; a Companion of Honour medal made £2800; and another World War 2 medal group comprising a DSM to Petty Officer Granville Galpin reached £1970.
