New bin collection service coming to the New Forest
A new household waste collection service for homes in the New Forest will begin this summer.
New Forest District Council (NFDC) has announced its plan to roll out a new household waste collection service starting this summer.
Households in the district will receive a black-lidded 180-litre wheelie bin for rubbish and a green-lidded 240-litre recycling bin, along with an outdoor and an indoor caddy for food waste.
Residents can see examples of the new general waste and recycling wheelie bins at NFDC’s information offices in Lymington, Lyndhurst (Appletree Court), New Milton, and Ringwood.
When the new service begins, recycling and rubbish will be collected on alternate weeks. This means general waste will be collected one week, and recycling collected the next.
Food waste will be collected every week. To get people started, the council is providing one roll of caddy liners.
Glass collections will continue to be made every four weeks using the black glass collection box.
The new service will be introduced in three phases, with three different areas starting at different times. Phase one of the rollout will begin from June 2025, phase two will start in October 2025, and phase three in March 2026.
Residents in the first phase area starting in June will get a letter and leaflet from February, and in the next few weeks there will be a postcode checker on the council’s website so all residents can check what phase they are in.
The NFDC will produce leaflets and guides on how to use bins and caddies, when they will be delivered, and any changes to collection days.
Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, said: “Our new waste collection service will mean that we can recycle even more, separate food waste, and reduce what’s thrown away, and it’s an exciting step towards a more sustainable future for our district.
“By making it easier for households to recycle food waste and reduce what they throw away, we are not only helping our environment but also ensuring a more efficient and effective waste collection service for all. We’re committed to supporting all residents during this transition and ensuring the new service works well for every household.”
