New paid internship programme at Ringwood School broadens horizons
Ringwood School has been successful in securing funding to provide opportunities for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) undergraduates to experience teaching before they commit to it as a career in secondary education in a new paid internship programme.
The 4-week programme, starting in June 2018, is aimed at second year (or penultimate year) students who may not have considered teaching as a career option but who would like to find out more and experience life in the classroom. Successful candidates will be paid £300 per week and will be hosted within one of the Ringwood School teaching alliance secondary schools.
This programme will offer undergraduates the chance to gain experience of teaching and will include:
· A combination of teaching, helping with experiments and inspiring future STEM projects.
· Structured training, shadowing and lesson observation followed by a chance to jointly plan and deliver lessons.
· One-to-one mentors who are experts in their specialism.
· Opportunities to network with qualified subject specialists and find out how rewarding a career in teaching would be.
Should the interns then decide to apply for teacher training, they will have continued contact with their mentor and the guidance and support to make a successful UCAS application.
Potential candidates wishing to express an interest in the internships need to complete an Expression of Interest form which can be found at: http://www.ringwood.hants.sch.uk/teaching-school/ringwood-school-teaching-alliance-paid-internships/. The deadline for completion of the form is 26 March 2018.
Clare Adams, deputy headteacher and director of the teaching school said, “We are delighted to have secured the funding for the Department for Education Paid internship scheme for teaching. The programme will give undergraduates a fantastic opportunity to gain first-hand experience of school life which is invaluable. We are welcoming applications from both local undergraduates and those who may be currently staying further afield but are looking to return to this area for the summer.”
