New project to help Dorset residents recycle electrical items
Litter Free Dorset is urging residents to reuse and recycle their electricals, starting with a ‘Give and Take’ event this Saturday.

Residents in Dorchester, Weymouth, Blandford, Sherborne, and Wimborne can now book free doorstep collections of small electrical goods, to be donated for repair. Litter Free Dorset is organising the Electrical Reuse Project, which aims to reduce electrical waste by collecting, repairing and redistributing unwanted or broken small household electricals.
As part of the project, Litter Free Dorset is organising a ‘Give or Take’ event on Saturday 17 May at Chickerell Chapel, 396D Chickerell Road, DT4 9TP, where repaired electricals will be given away for free and electricals can be collected for recycling. Further events will take place in the coming months.
Following the event, residents can book a doorstep collection via Litter Free Dorset website at www.litterfreedorset.co.uk/recycle-your-electricals. Any items that cannot be repaired will be recycled.
There are currently four scheduled home collection periods, starting with Weymouth from Monday 9 to Friday 13 June, then Blandford between 23 and 27 June, Sherborne between 8 and 12 September, and Wimborne between 20 and 24 October.
It is hoped that over 56,000 households across the community will support the project, which is launched in collaboration with Dorset Repair Cafés.
Emma Teasdale, Litter Free Dorset coordinator, said: “We want to make it as accessible and as convenient as possible for people to repair and reuse small electricals, via a combination of in-person events and free home collection services for small electricals.”
The Electrical Reuse Project is being funded by Material Focus, a not-for-profit leading the Recycle Your Electricals campaign, who have provided £48,074 to support this initiative.
The project has also received support from the council. Nick Ireland, Dorset Council Leader said: “As the Cabinet lead on climate and the environment, I am thrilled to support the Litter Free Dorset Electrical Reuse Project. This initiative not only tackles the critical issue of e-waste but also strengthens our community by promoting sustainability and cooperation.
“By making it easier for everyone to repair, reuse, and recycle their electricals, we are paving the way for a greener and more connected Dorset. I encourage everyone to join in, take advantage of the free collection services, and participate in the local events. Together, we can make a substantial difference for our environment and our community.”
