NHS celebrates one million flu jabs in the South West
Over one million flu vaccinations have been administered in South West so far, helping people stay well this winter.
The NHS in the South West is thanking all those who have already had their flu vaccine so far this year and is urging anyone eligible for a jab to get one as levels of flu continue to rise.
So far, over 1.2 million flu vaccinations have been administered in the South West.
Anyone can get a flu jab, but the NHS provides free vaccinations to pregnant women, children aged from two to 16, anyone aged 65 years and over, anyone aged under 65 years in clinical risk groups, care home residents and staff, carers in receipt of carer’s allowance, frontline health and social care.
Dr Matthew Dominey, immunisation lead for NHS England South West said: “The flu vaccine helps to reduce your chances of having serious illness. It is vital that those eligible continue to come forward and receive their vaccines before we head into winter.
“Flu can be a serious or life-threatening illness, and we are already seeing a rise in the level of flu circulating in our communities. Getting your flu vaccine is the best protection against flu and, as the flu virus changes every year, it’s important to get a vaccination each year to ensure your protection and help reduce the spread to others.
“Children can also get a free flu vaccine, and most schools will be offering this within school hours. Parents, please ensure you sign and return your child’s vaccine consent form, or if your child has missed their school session, you can attend a catch-up community clinic during the upcoming half-term.”
The latest data published by the UKHSA showed that flu cases and hospitalisations are on the rise, with transmission among school-aged children driving the early start to the season.
The NHS strongly encourages everyone eligible to get their flu jab as soon as possible if they haven’t already done so.
The South West has also administered over 430,000 COVID-19 vaccinations to help protect those most at risk.
If you are eligible, you can book your flu or COVID-19 vaccine via the NHS App, online at www.nhs.uk/bookflu or www.nhs.uk/bookcovid, or by calling 119. You can also find your nearest drop-in service or use the NHS walk-in finder.
Anyone can help stop the spread of flu and COVID-19 by ensuring good hygiene. Steps you can take include:
- Stay at home and avoid close contact with others if you’re not feeling well
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water
- Let fresh air in if you’re meeting indoors
- Using tissues to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues in a bin as soon as possible
Regularly clean surfaces such as tables, telephones and door handles.
