The Bookerie Reading Garden at Oakdale Library is celebrating scooping second place at this year’s Dorset Wildlife Trust Awards.
Created by Creekmoor with Oakdale Womens Institute and Poole Culture Volunteers, the garden won second prize in the ‘School/Community Garden’ category of the Wildlife Friendly Garden Competition.
Gardens were assessed on what had been done to provide for wildlife and the amount of effort put into creating wildlife habitats.
The reading Garden, which opened in August 2014, features planted areas, seats, bird boxes and a water feature. It is well used for storytimes, children’s activities and community events, as well as being a quiet place to sit and read.
Cllr Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: “What fantastic news for the garden and the many people involved in this community project.
I am delighted their hard work and dedication has been recognised at the awards.
“With over 50 gardens being entered into the competition and judges declaring this year as the best standard of wildlife friendly gardening, I am immensely proud of our achievement. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved in this truly beautiful creation.”
