It is a sad fact that some children in Dorset cannot live with their family, through no fault of their own. Sometimes this is temporary, and sometimes it will be for the rest of their childhood. Dorset needs more people who can offer a family life for these children.
That is why from 16-29 May, Dorset County Council is supporting Foster Care Fortnight. This is a national campaign which highlights the need for more people to consider looking after a child or young person in Dorset.
We know that when placing vulnerable children with foster families it is essential for them to have as much stability as possible. It is really important for children to stay at their own school and any clubs or groups they belong to like Scouts, Guides or a football club. Dorset is a large county and it is vital that young people can be placed with foster families in rural and urban areas, right across the county.
Cllr Rebecca Knox, Dorset County Council’s Cabinet member for Children’s Safeguarding said, “If you think you could make a difference to a child’s life, please pop along to one of our roadshows or get in touch with our fostering team. The team can answer any questions you may have and guide you through the process of becoming a foster carer, including what it involves and all the support you will receive.”

Children with a disability are one of the most overlooked groups of children in need of special care. The council needs carers to help look after children who have a disability, either for just a few hours, maybe overnight, or to offer a longer-term placement.
Cllr Knox added, “Foster carers come from all walks of life. So whether you’re in a couple or single, working or not, have a family or live alone or if you rent or own your home – don’t rule yourself out.”
