Original Music Awards celebrate Dorset’s music scene
The third annual red-carpet event saw many local acts receive recognition and awards for their creative work.

An annual red-carpet event set up to celebrate the county’s original music creators, promoters, and venues was held at Poole Lighthouse on Friday 17 January.
For the third year running, the Original Music Awards (OMAs) are organised by the recording studio Hangover Hill, operated by Dorset’s legendary ‘piano man’ Matt Black. Nominees for the awards are decided by an independent judging panel of music reviewers, musicians, backstage crew, radio presenters, festival organisers, and more.
Among the many awards handed out during the night included: Best Recorded Work (Video) for Nick Capaldi’s ‘Lovely People’, Best Small Band for the two-person synth/pop act Velour, and Best Band went to rock group Mikey Ball & The Company.
A set of special awards were also handed out to honour those whose music, and the circumstances in which it is made, call for wider recognition. The acclaimed musician PJ Harvey received a special award for her contribution to local music, with the panel praising the way she kept Dorset at the “heart” of her work. In a recorded message, Harvey said she was honoured and very grateful for the award.
The organisers said: “In the three years the OMAs have existed, musician across Dorset have been motivated by their recognition and have been spurred on to writing, performing, and releasing more incredible music. Venues that held live music nights have increased their frequency after they’ve realised that it is what people are asking for, catering for the appetite they’ve seen from winners and nominees of the OMAs.”
