Oxbridge and Ivy League Scholars among University Successes

So far, the 125 pupils in the Upper Sixth who had applied through UCAS have received an impressive total of 455 offers of places at university with 75% of these from top institutions and 90% of the pupils obtaining at least one offer from these high tariff institutions.

Among the many highlights, Aryan Sheikhalian has been awarded a fully financed place at Columbia University, the 3rd Ivy League place for a Canfordian in the past two years; Joe Payne has been offered a choral scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge; Ella Dunlop was offered places from all four of her applications to study Medicine while Georgina Hopkins received offers from all four applications to read Veterinary Medicine, one of the most competitive courses in the country; and Trystan Perkins has been offered a golf award at the University of Texas.  Of the 15 pupils who applied for the highly competitive Medic/Dentistry/Veterinary Science courses, 12 gained offers – taking the total of successful applications in the past decade to 90, an 81% application/offer rate.

Congratulations also go to Rebecca Hart who has won a university sponsorship with Price Waterhouse Coopers, and 13 Canfordians have been awarded places on the highly competitive JP Morgan summer placement programme.

Michael Doherty, Head of Careers, commented, “Once again we are seeing a very high percentage of offers to top universities in the UK and continuing success in our applications to the US. Competition for places on highly sought-after courses at these institutions continues to be very tough. For a successful interview and application, careful research and preparation is a prerequisite and this is where Canford adds real value. As ever there have been a small number of unexpected disappointments but overall we are delighted with the results achieved. We are also seeing an increase in successful university sponsorships and in placements with top corporations and we will continue to develop these links both at home and abroad. Our online mentoring network of Old Canfordians and parents is also providing a valuable resource in opening doors to career opportunities in a wide range of sectors.”
