East Dorset District Council is warning residents to be aware of a potential scam where people are being asked to pay for parking fines that they don’t owe.
The warning comes after a local woman received a telephone call from a person claiming to be from East Dorset District Council and asking her to pay for an outstanding parking fine.
The woman recognised that the call was not genuine and told the caller that she did not have any parking fines to pay.
The council will only contact people about outstanding parking fines by letter and will not call and ask for payment of parking fines over the phone.
The council is urging people to be vigilant and not to give personal or financial information over the phone if they receive a phone call of this kind.
If in doubt about whether a call from the council is genuine, please call the East Dorset District Council Offices on 01202 886201.
Please report any suspicious phone calls or suspected scams to the dedicated fraud line Action Fraud on 0300 1232040 or through their website http://www.actionfraud.police.uk
