Volunteer marshals from Poole’s regular weekly bike meet on Poole Quay have made a donation on behalf of Poole Dream Machines to local charity, Dorset DocBike.
Following the end of the 2016 season, Dr Ian Mew was presented with a cheque for £1,500 for Dorset DocBike. This initiative delivers emergency first aid tips and training for riders who may come across an injured biker, works with bikers to promote safer riding, and provides direct roadside critical care. The scheme is part of Dorset Bike Safe, run by Dorset Police, which provides training and information to reduce the number of bikers being hurt on the road.
Ian is an intensive care doctor specialising in motorcycle trauma and critical care who works as the BikeSafe Medical Advisor. As a consultant in anaesthetics & intensive care medicine, clinical director of major trauma at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and a flying doctor on the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Ian has first-hand experience of dealing with biking accidents.
Chosen by the volunteer marshals, the charity donation is made by Poole Dream Machines from any surplus income once all the charges and running costs of the event are paid. Charities receiving donations in the past have included The Youth Cancer Trust and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. This year, Poole Old Town Community Group also received a donation of £150.
Chief marshal, Kerry Pope, said, “Dorset DocBike is a small charity that is having a massive impact locally and this year the marshals wanted to make a donation that benefits all bikers directly. The work they do with riders to share critical lifesaving information as well as providing on the scene medical support, is just fantastic and we are really proud to support it.”
Organised by Poole Tourism, Dream Machines is part of Poole’s packed summer events programme. Dream Machines is supported by a team of volunteers who provide vital help with parking at the event. Anyone with a few hours to spare who is interested in helping out and supporting the future of the event as a marshal, please contact Anne Simpson on 07973 474050.
