Poole RNLI help evacuate seasick sailor at Studland Bay
Poole Lifeboat was launched on Sunday to a yacht fouled on a marker buoy in Studland Bay and one of the crew had to be evacuated.
UK Coastguard requested Poole Lifeboat to launch on Easter Sunday after a yacht became fouled on a marker buoy in Studland Bay.
The 10-metre yacht, with three people onboard, had also suffered an engine overheat and one of the crew was becoming increasingly unwell in the choppy sea conditions.
The lifeboat launched on 31 March shortly after 2.30pm and located the yacht in Studland Bay. With the wind blowing south-easterly force 4, the conditions were uncomfortable.
The police vessel, Buccaneer, was also on scene.
Although the yacht had become clear off the buoy, it was at anchor due to engine issues.
A lifeboat crewmember was transferred to the yacht to make an initial assessment and the unwell person was quickly evacuated.
The casualty, suffering from severe sea sickness, was carefully passed onto the lifeboat, and then onto Buccaneer for a swift journey back to Poole Lifeboat Station for further care.
The yacht’s engine was tested, however the overheat alarm sounded again. On discussion with the RNLI volunteer onboard, the skipper was happy to sail in through the harbour entrance and for the lifeboat to escort them.
Once safely inside the entrance the lifeboat picked up their crew and returned to the lifeboat station.
Poole volunteer Stirling said: “We’re glad we were able to help the crew of the yacht get safely ashore today. Sadly, things can go wrong at sea and a fouled propellor, an overheat and a seasick crewmember all happening at once, the skipper did the right thing to call for assistance.”
Volunteers back at the lifeboat station had been warming up the casualty with a supply of tea and biscuits.
This was the 14th launch for Poole volunteers this year.
