St Aldhelm’s Academy students have discovered a flair for creative writing thanks to members of Parkstone Rotary Club.
As part of their school enrichment sessions, six pupils aged 11-17 joined a writing group at the beginning of the autumn term.
Six members of the Rotary club joined the class to work with the students, discussing their own favourite books and encouraging them to explore their imaginations through their writing.
Dagmar James, Literacy resources manager at St Aldhelm’s said: “It has been wonderful to see the pupils being inspired to write by the Rotarians.
“Parkstone Rotary already plays an important part in the academy, having visited to help students with their presentation skills and also to run a very successful careers fair. Now they are using their own love of the written word to inspire students.”
The creative writing class is one of a host of activities St Aldhelm’s pupils can pursue during their enrichment sessions, along with catering, presenting on school radio and writing for the school newspaper.
Mrs James continued: “To celebrate the pupils’ achievements we were joined by Rotarians, parents and also representatives of Waitrose in Parkstone, who judged the final written pieces and presented two winning students with gift vouchers.”
Harry Collins of Parkstone Rotary Club said: “We have enjoyed being part of the group very much and have been told that there has been a lot of interest from other pupils wishing to join next term.
“We are now looking forward to working with them from February.”
