Nearly 250 runners defied the rain and strong south-westerly winds to run the Second Purbeck Marathon. Bournemouth’s Steven Way defended his title although the winds slowed him to a time of 3.06. The first woman home was Rhiannon Shepherd of Southampton Athletic Club in a time of 3.42. 231 runners started the gruelling event with 223 finishing the race. The final finisher arrived in 6.50, well within the race time limit.
The Purbeck Marathon attracts runners from across the UK as well as a few from further afield. Many local runners took part with Neil McDermott the first local male in 3.51 and Bex Johnson the first local female in 4.32. A large proportion of the runners also took part in the inaugural event in 2012 and many more have pledged to enter again.
The Purbeck Marathon is a spectacular event that showcases the beautiful scenery in this corner of Dorset. It is not for the faint-hearted. The race of over 26 miles is complemented by over 3,000 feet of climbing and most of the Marathon is on tracks, grass and gravel paths. The weather can also play a major role.
Race Director Rose Clarke noted: “We are very proud of what we achieved in 2012 and indications from runners are that we have improved upon it in 2013. A lot of work goes into this event in the months beforehand and on the day. We are extremely grateful to those who give up their free time to help make the Marathon very special for those who come and visit our wonderful part of the country.”
This year, the marathon is supporting Swanage Carnival charities as well as Help for Heroes, a national charity that has strong local connections.
The organisers have announced that entries for the 2014 Purbeck Marathon on 14 September are already open with details available at www.thepurbeckmarathon.co.uk.
