NEWS FEED
Thanks to £3,900 funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Radio Wimborne will be broadcasting live on 87.7FM from 3 June for a fortnight. This will incorporate live and recorded coverage of this year’s Folk Festival (10– 12 June).
Radio Wimborne Director, Kelly Webb said, “As an on-line station, it’s not always been easy for the whole community to access it, so we have looked for ways to improve this whilst developing a fantastic project to record the history of the Folk Festival and how the town has changed over those years.”
As well as the current programming of community news, views, local voices and a wide variety of specialist music shows; there will be specific programmes dedicated to showcasing the history being collected. Shows featuring interviews with past and present folk festival organisers and town’s people sharing their memories will also be broadcast.
Kelly added, “Everyone knows how rich in history Wimborne Minster is and the Folk Festival has been part of that history for over 30 years. With such relevant and special historical information to collect, we naturally thought of the Heritage Lottery Fund as a way to support the work we wanted to do to bring it to life. We want to capture the story from those key people that were there at the start. We’re excited that people will be able to listen to us in their cars and on their radios and when they hear all the local people that talk to us, we hope they’ll love Radio Wimborne as much as we do! This is an exciting development in Radio Wimborne’s lifecycle as well as genuine modern history project for future generations.”
As well as the oral histories, they are collecting hard copy material (photographs etc) and displaying a timeline of the festival through the years during the fortnight on FM. After which the material will be passed to the Priest’s House Museum for safe keeping and further exhibiting. There will also be a Radio Roadshow on Wimborne Square on Saturday 4 June.
This is the latest in a series of town events that Radio Wimborne has developed, including two Lumieres on the minster last year. For more information or to contribute to content, please get in touch on info@radiowimborne.co.uk.
