Recycle your Christmas tree and help charity at the same time
Several Dorset charities are offering a tree recycling service, including Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity.
Having a real Christmas tree in your home is a pleasant tradition. And once Christmas is over and the presents have been opened, getting rid of your tree can even be an act of good.
Several charities in the area offer a tree recycling service in the New Year. In return for a donation, they will pick up your tree from the side of the road and make sure it is properly disposed of, usually in a sustainable manner.
One such charity is Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity. It started taking bookings for its annual Christmas tree recycling service on 1 November. The service is sponsored by Waste Management Facilities.
The charity has now been collecting Christmas trees from the local community for over 10 years. Collections can be booked online for a suggested £10 donation and will take place between Thursday 8 January and Sunday 11 January 2026 from Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, East Dorset and Ringwood.
Francesca Potton, community fundraiser at Diverse Abilities, commented: “We’re thrilled to see the return of our Treecycling service for another year. It’s one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and a real community effort. By booking to have your Christmas tree collected by Diverse Abilities you can help us raise vital funds to run our services that support children and adults with disabilities across Dorset.”
The charity’s team of volunteers will take the trees to a facility to be recycled into wood chippings.
Lisa Delahunty, managing director at Waste Management Facilities Limited, commented: “We’re thrilled to continue working with Diverse Abilities on their Treecycling project again. We will be helping over the collection weekend with the logistics and providing a volunteer team, to collect Christmas trees and raise money to support programmes for children and adults with disabilities across Dorset.”
Diverse Abilities also needs volunteers to help the Treecycling team collect and recycle Christmas trees. Families and businesses with access to vans, pickup trucks or buses who would like to get involved should contact Francesca on 01202 718266.
