Residents asked to comment on Canford Magna incinerator proposal
A consultation is open regarding a new incinerator in Canford Resource Park which would burn up to 260,000 tonnes of waste each year.
The Environment Agency is asking Dorset residents to share their views on proposals for a new waste incinerator to be built in Canford Resource Park, in Canford Magna.
The consultation relates to energy company MVV Environment Ltd, which wants to build the incinerator and burn up to 260,000 tonnes of waste each year to produce electricity.
MVV has applied for an environmental permit from the Environment Agency and for planning permission from BCP Council. It needs both in order to build and operate the incinerator.
To receive the permit, the company must show they will put measures in place to protect human health and the environment and explain how they will prevent or minimise any risks identified, such as emissions or odours.
If the Environment Agency is likely to issue a permit, it will consult again on the draft permit and draft decision document, so residents can comment on the conditions to be included in the permit.
Steve Harper, who is part of the Stop Parley and Canford Incinerators campaign, said: “There is no easy answer to the ever-increasing amounts of waste we produce, but we have to find better solutions than burning it. Incinerators are a disaster for our health and for our environment, they are not a green or low carbon source of energy as their proponents claim.
“If the government reaches their targets for waste reduction, there actually won’t even be enough rubbish to burn – termed ‘feedstock’ in the industry – to justify an incinerator burning all day every day for 40 years – it’s madness. There certainly won’t be enough feedstock to justify building new incinerators in Canford Magna, Parley and Portland.
“As a society, we have to reduce the amount we consume – cutting back on all the things we buy but don’t need can actually be liberating. At the same time, we must pressure the multinational giants that produce the majority of this waste whilst raking in billions in profits to take responsibility and start coming up with solutions.”
Residents have until 11.59pm on 27 October to make comments about the application. To comment, visit the online web page: https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/psc/bh21-3bw-mvv-environment-limited, email pscpublicresponse@environment-agency.gov.uk, or write to Environment Agency Permitting and Support Centre, Land Team, Quadrant 2, 99 Parkway Avenue, Sheffield, S9 4WF. Quote the application number EPR/SP3127SF/A001 if you contact the Agency.
